The 10 Countries Holding the Most Gold in Their Vaults |
|
|
The World Gold Council's latest data, compiled from IMF reports and central bank disclosures through September 2026, shows the world's central banks sitting on 36,535 tonnes of gold — about 17% of all gold ever mined. The United States leads with 8,133 tonnes, a position unchanged since the 1970s. The real movement is lower in the ranking. |

Poland is the outlier. Its central bank has more than doubled its gold reserves since 2018, reaching 648 tonnes by August 2026. Governor Adam Glapiński has publicly targeted 700 tonnes and needs about 52 more to get there. Poland was the world's largest official buyer in both 2024 and 2025, purchasing 102 tonnes last year alone. Through June 2026, it added another 82 tonnes. A NATO frontline state on Russia's border is quietly building one of the largest gold hoards in Europe. Then there is China. Its reported holdings have climbed to 2,410 tonnes, but gold still represents only about 8.5% of China's total reserves. For the United States and the major European holders, that share is above 80%. Even a modest rebalancing toward 15% would require China to nearly double its gold position — a buying program measured in thousands of tonnes that would take years to execute. |

The top four positions are frozen in place. The United States accumulated most of its gold when Allied nations paid for war materials in bullion and the Bretton Woods system pegged the dollar at $35 an ounce. Germany, Italy, and France built their reserves in the decades that followed. None has meaningfully altered its holdings since. Together, those four hold 16,373 tonnes — nearly 45% of all official gold. Russia at number six is equally predictable. The Bank of Russia bought roughly 1,900 tonnes between 2006 and 2020, a deliberate shift away from dollar-denominated assets that predated the 2022 sanctions by more than a decade. It has barely changed its position since. The chart, in that sense, is less a ranking of strategy and more a map of 20th-century monetary history — except at the bottom, where new buyers are rewriting it. |

[URGENT!] The Final Move Before CBDCs
Bank of America just revealed your expiration date.
In their Bloomberg interview, they didn't just predict the digital dollar. They gave us the timeline…
2025 to 2030.
We're in that window right now.
Their exact words: CBDCs are an "inevitable evolution of today's electronic currencies."
The Federal Reserve has already asked for public comment. The infrastructure is being built as you read this.
Once the digital dollar launches, every transaction you make will be tracked. Your spending could be controlled. Your accounts could be frozen.
China already did this. Nigeria already did this.
But there's still a legal backdoor.
I'm Tan Gera, ex-Wall Street banker and CFA Charterholder.
I left the system when I saw what was coming.
Over 4,500 investors have already used this legal backdoor to hold assets CBDCs can't freeze and generate yields the Federal Reserve can't touch.
Bank of America said 2025-2030. We're already in 2026.
The window is closing.

China's monthly PBoC disclosures. The bank has reported steady buying since late 2024. Poland is 52 tonnes short of its stated 700-tonne target, with Governor Glapiński showing no signs of slowing down. The World Gold Council's Q3 2026 Gold Demand Trends report, due in late October, will show whether global central bank buying reaccelerated after the 2025 dip. In the WGC's latest survey, a record 45% of reserve managers said they plan to add gold over the next 12 months. We'll be watching. |
