Norway has 5,627,400 people. It has 447 Winter Olympic medals, 84 more than the United States. Per million residents, Norway has won 79. The United States has won one.
February widened it. Norway took 41 medals at Milan Cortina, the most any nation has won at a Winter Games, beating its own 39 from 2018. Eighteen were gold. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won six of those himself, a record for one Games.
Austria sits fourth on 269 medals from nine million people, and has won more Olympic Alpine skiing medals than any other country. The Netherlands is tenth on 167, almost all of them won on skates. These are not broad sporting powers. They are countries that are very good at one thing.

Every country in the top ten sits in Europe or North America. Eight are European. Of the 25 Winter Games held since 1924, 21 were staged in those two places.
Asia's best is Japan, on 100 medals. Then China, 92. Then South Korea, 89. Together the three have 281, still 166 short of Norway alone.
Africa has never won a Winter medal. Brazil won its first in February, a gold in the giant slalom. Twenty-nine countries won something at Milan Cortina. Nineteen won a gold.

The next Winter Games open in the French Alps on 1 February 2030. Norway leads the United States by 84 medals and took eight more than it did in February. The gap is widening. The second thing to track is whether any country outside Europe and North America reaches the top ten. Japan is the closest, and 67 behind. We'll be watching. |
