The 10 Most Obese Countries in the World |
|
|
The WHO tracks obesity in every country. On the 2022 figures, the ten heaviest nations are almost all Pacific islands. In Tonga, more than seven adults in ten are obese. The United States — where you'd expect the top spot — doesn't crack the top fifteen. |

| What's Surprising |
Tonga leads the world. More than seven adults in ten are obese — 72%, the highest rate anywhere. Nine of the ten heaviest countries are Pacific islands. The Bahamas is the only outsider.
The cause isn't fast food alone. Traditional Pacific diets gave way to cheap imports — mutton flaps, turkey tails, tinned meat, white rice, sugar. Shipped-in calories turned cheaper than local fish and root crops. In one generation, the plate changed.
The country most people would name first isn't on the list. The United States, at 43%, sits outside the top fifteen — behind nine Pacific nations, the Bahamas, and a row of Gulf and Caribbean states. It leads the rich world. It doesn't lead the planet.
| What's Not Surprising |
Wealth and weight travel together, up to a point. Mexico 37%. Britain 28%. Where food is cheap and everywhere, waistlines grow. The rich world carries weight the poor world can't afford.
Then Asia holds the line. China 8%. Japan 6%. Vietnam 2%, the lowest on Earth. Rice, smaller portions and more walking keep the numbers down — though China's cities are catching up fast.
The direction is one-way. WHO counted 890 million obese adults in 2022. Add children and it tops a billion — one in eight people alive. Adult obesity has more than doubled since 1990. The Pacific is the extreme; the trend is everywhere.

New global estimates come every few years, and the line only points up. Three things to watch. Whether GLP-1 drugs — Ozempic, Wegovy — bend the curve in rich countries; early US data shows the rise has stalled for the first time in a decade. Whether Pacific taxes on fatty imports move the needle. And whether China, still at 8%, follows the Western path as its cities grow. We'll be watching. |
