The 10 Countries That Supply the World's Peacekeepers |
|
|
The UN counted 47,022 uniformed peacekeepers on 31 January, drawn from 120 countries across 11 missions. Nepal supplies more of them than anyone. The United States, which pays 26% of the bill, supplies 20. |

| What's Surprising |
Nepal has 30 million people and no strategic stake in Congo or South Sudan. It supplies 4,480 uniformed peacekeepers, more than any other country. Rwanda is third with 4,201, from a population of 14 million. That is one peacekeeper for every 3,400 Rwandans.
The money and the manpower come from different places. The United States pays 26.2% of the peacekeeping budget and supplies 20 people, 0.04% of the force. With China it funds about half the bill. Troop contributors get reimbursed roughly $1,410 a month per soldier.
China is the only permanent member of the Security Council in the top ten. Russia sends 57. The United Kingdom sends 253. All five veto powers together field 2,632, fewer than Nepal alone.
| What's Not Surprising |
The force is shrinking. In February 2018 the UN fielded 91,544 uniformed peacekeepers. It now fields 47,022, roughly half. The Mali and Darfur missions closed. Congo drew down.
The cause is money. In October 2025 the UN said it would send 13,000 to 14,000 peacekeepers home, a quarter of the force, after Washington cut its contribution from about $1 billion to $680 million. Unpaid assessments stood at $1.6 billion at the end of 2025.
The names at the top do not move. Nepal, India, Rwanda and Bangladesh held the same four places in March 2026. Those four supply 36% of every peacekeeper the UN has.

The UN publishes these counts every month. The next budget is already smaller: $5.1 billion for 2026–27, adopted 1 July. UNIFIL's mandate ends on 31 December 2026 and the force leaves Lebanon in 2027, which pulls Italy and much of Europe off this list. Watch whether Nepal holds the top spot as missions close. We'll be watching. |
