The 10 Happiest Countries in the World |
|
|
The World Happiness Report landed in March. Finland is first again, for the ninth year running. The surprise sits at fourth: Costa Rica has cracked the top five, the first country outside Europe ever to do it. The United States is 23rd, down from 17th a decade ago. |

| What's Surprising |
Costa Rica is the fourth-happiest country on Earth, at 7.439. It sits ahead of Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. No Latin American country had ever reached the top five. Costa Rica is far poorer than the countries it now outscores.
It has no army. Costa Rica abolished the military in 1948 and put the money into schools and clinics. Health care is universal. People there call the way they live pura vida. Whatever it is, it beats nations with several times the income.
The whole top tier is bunched. First place to tenth is a gap of 0.746, less than a single point. Iceland took second from Denmark by one thousandth: 7.540 to 7.539.
| What's Not Surprising |
Five of the top six are Nordic: Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway. The same names sit at the top every year, and have for a decade. Cold, dark, high-tax, high-trust. The model keeps winning.
The rich English-speaking world ranks lower. The United States is 23rd, Britain 29th. America first fell out of the top 20 in 2024. Gallup says the cause is the young: Americans under 30 have grown markedly less happy.
The measure is simple. Gallup asks people to rate their own life from 0 to 10. Money helps, but health, freedom and having someone to count on matter more. At the bottom sits Afghanistan, at 1.446.

The next report comes in March. Watch three things. Whether Costa Rica holds a top-five place, or slips back the way new entrants often do. Whether the United States keeps sliding, three years after it dropped out of the top 20. And the young: the report now warns that under-30s in North America are pulling the average down. We'll be watching. |
