Most people missed it. But if you go back and listen carefully, there's a pattern.
Trump didn't just mention gold once. He's dropped a series of sly hints that, when you line them up, paint a very clear picture.
He promised a "new American Golden Age." Most people took that as a slogan. What if it wasn't?
He warned that to fix the economy "there would be some pain." Most people assumed he meant tariffs. What if he meant something bigger?
His Treasury Secretary went on national television and said the administration plans to "monetize the assets on the balance sheet." The government's single biggest asset? 261 million ounces of gold valued at $42 an ounce on the books. Worth over $1.2 trillion at market prices.
There's legislation in his own party right now to revalue that gold. A Federal Reserve economist published a paper on how to do it. And central banks around the world are hoarding gold like they already know the ending.
One hint is a comment. Two is a coincidence. This many is a plan.
No president since Nixon has talked about gold this openly. And the last time a president acted on gold, FDR in 1934, it created one of the biggest wealth events of the century. Most Americans had no idea until it was too late.

The United States is on this register. On 18 January 2025, TikTok and the other ByteDance apps went dark for 14 hours under a national security law. Access Now counts a platform block as a shutdown, so America appears for the first time since the count began in 2016.
Myanmar ordered 95, across all fourteen states and regions, 76 of them by the junta. Blackouts were running in March when the strongest earthquake in the country’s recorded history hit. Rescue teams worked without a signal.
Russia’s 19 is the softest number here. Officials call the cuts a defence against Ukrainian drones. Access Now’s partners describe hundreds to thousands of regional mobile blackouts since May, most still unverified. Nineteen is a floor.

India is second again with 65, its lowest total since 2017, spread across twelve states and territories. Asia and the Pacific accounted for 195 of the world’s 313. War accounts for much of the rest: 125 shutdowns in 14 countries, 40% of the total.
China recorded two. The country with the most controlled internet on Earth rarely has to switch anything off, because the filtering never stops. This list counts interruptions, not censorship.
The method is also getting quieter. Governments blocked a single platform — WhatsApp, TikTok, Telegram — 94 times in 40 countries, up from 77 in 2024. Cheaper than a blackout, and harder to photograph.

Seventy-five shutdowns in 33 countries carried over from 2025 into 2026, so this year’s count starts in deficit. Access Now has opened an elections watch for 2026, and elections are the reliable trigger: twelve shutdowns in eight countries last year. Watch the satellites too. Fourteen shutdowns reached Starlink and other low-orbit systems in 2025, against four in 2024. The connection governments could not switch off is now one they can. The next count lands in March.
