|
|
The World Steel Association published its 2025 figures in January. The world's mills turned out 1,849.4 million tonnes. China made 960.8 of them — more than the other 69 reporting countries put together. Chinese output fell 4.4% last year. The share is still 52%. |

"BEST EXPLANATION on Options hands down!!"
Let's face it - options trading can be confusing.
That's why I put together this free report that explains it using cartoon stick figures:
I've been teaching options to regular people since 2001, and this is easily my most popular training of all time.
Here are a few comments from my readers:
"BEST EXPLANATION on Options hands down!!"
"Best explanations i've seen on the net so far! great job!"
"This was so so helpful. The cartoons helped and then all of the sudden, the formal definition just clicked! Thank you!!"
"Bill Poulos is the first to explain call and put options in a language I understand."
"I’m not even done... and the explanation is so good I had to comment. Dude you are a great teacher."
This report sells for $29.97 on my website, but today, you can download a copy for free.
The only catch is that the download link will expire, and when it does, you'll have to pay full price on my website.
P.S. This is my #1 most popular options trading report. Normally $29.97 on my website, but free via this backdoor download link:
| What's Surprising |
China had a bad year and still ran the industry. Output dropped 4.4% to 960.8 million tonnes, the lowest since 2018. The drop alone was 44.3 million tonnes. Germany's entire 2025 production was 34.1.
One Chinese company, Baowu, made 124.8 million tonnes. That is more steel than every country on Earth except China and India. ArcelorMittal, the largest steelmaker outside China, made 63.4.
The United States took third place back from Japan. It did not earn it. American mills made 82.0 million tonnes, up 3.1%. Japanese mills made 80.7, down 4.0%. India, meanwhile, added 15.5 million tonnes in a single year and now makes twice as much steel as the United States.
| What's Not Surprising |
Asia and Oceania made 1,324.5 million tonnes, 72% of the world total. Steel goes where the cranes are. China uses 562 kilos of it per person a year, India 109, and the world average is 209.
Europe is the other direction. The EU made 126.2 million tonnes, down 2.6%. Germany made 34.1, down 8.6% and the least since the 2009 crash. France fell 8.7%. Türkiye now makes more steel than Germany does.
The world made less steel in 2025 than it did in 2020. It also shipped more of it around: 456.5 million tonnes of steel crossed a border, and China's exports hit a record above 119 million tonnes. That number is why the tariff files keep landing.

|
51.9% China's share of the world's crude steel in 2025. In 2015 it was 49.4%. In 2024 it was 54.0%. |

44.3 Mt How much Chinese output fell in one year. Germany, eighth on the list, made 34.1 million tonnes in total. |

124.8 Mt Baowu's output. One company outproduced every country except China and India, the United States included. |

109 kg Steel used per person in India last year. China uses 562. That gap is the next twenty years of demand. |

119 Mt Chinese steel exports in 2025, a record. World steel exports totalled 456.5 million tonnes, from a world output of 1,849.4. |

The 2026 numbers are running the same way. Through July, China is down 3.1% and India is up 6.1%. Hold those rates to December and China lands near 930 million tonnes — still just over half the world's steel. Beijing has promised to cap output through 2030 and has put licences on some steel exports. Watch what those exports do, because 119 million tonnes looking for a buyer is what sets tariff policy in Brussels, Delhi and Washington. Next monthly figures land at the end of September. We'll be watching. |
