Wikipedia runs 348 active language editions. English is the largest, with 7.24 million articles. The second-largest is not German, French or Spanish. It is Cebuano, a language of about 20 million people in the Philippines. A machine wrote nearly all of it. |

Practice the scary part for $0
Nobody's first skydive is a solo jump.
Nobody's first surgery is on a live patient.
But for some reason, most beginners think their first options trade has to be with real money — which is exactly why they never place it.
Here's what they don't know:
Every major broker has a full practice mode. Real screens, real prices, fake money.
Inside Your First Trade Playbook, I walk you through a 10-minute "dress rehearsal" — one complete trade, entered and exited, with zero real dollars at risk.
You'll fumble the buttons. You'll feel your heart rate jump at the confirm screen. And you'll get all of it out of your system while mistakes are still free.
The playbook is normally $29.97. Free today.
One evening, and the scary part is behind you.
P.S. The nerves don't go away by reading about trading. They go away by pressing the buttons. There's a way to do that for free — it's in the playbook.
| What's Surprising |
Cebuano Wikipedia has 6.12 million articles and 269 active users. English has 260,720 active users. That works out to about 22,700 articles for every active Cebuano editor. English has 28.
The cause is one program. Sverker Johansson, a Swede, began running his bot, Lsjbot, in 2011. It turned databases of species and places into short articles — a river, a mountain, a beetle. By January 2019 it had written 9.5 million of them. About two-thirds went into Cebuano, his wife’s native language. Most of the rest went into Swedish.
Swedish Wikipedia ranks 5th, with 2.63 million articles for 10 million native speakers. When it passed one million articles in June 2013, Lsjbot had written almost half of them. Waray, spoken by 3.6 million people, has 1.27 million articles and 88 active users.
| What's Not Surprising |
English leads by any measure. It holds 7.24 million articles, more than twice German’s 3.15 million. It was the first edition, launched on 15 January 2001, and it passed 7 million articles on 28 May 2025.
The rest of the human-written top ten is European. German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Polish. All seven launched in 2001. The German, French, Spanish and Italian editions each have more than 26,000 active users. Wikipedia’s volunteers are still concentrated where the project began.
Article count follows volunteer hours, not speakers. Dutch has 25 million native speakers and 2.23 million articles. Spanish has 519 million and 2.14 million. Hindi has 345 million native speakers and 171,421 articles. That is one article for every 2,000 of them.

The counts move every day. Two things to track. First, Cebuano’s hold on second place. By 2020 Lsjbot had switched to maintenance only, and German, the next edition down, trails by 2.96 million articles. Human editors will not close that gap soon. Second, the machines. Bots did much of the writing in two of the top five. Machine translation and AI writing are cheaper now than Lsjbot ever was. The next reshuffle of this list, if it comes, will be automated again. We’ll be watching. |
